Thanks to Everyone Who Helped Make the 2014 Conference a Success!


 82 registrants from markets all over the US and Canada attended the 68th Annual Conference in New York City,
March 26th -29th, 2014. The conference was dedicated to the memory of the late Pat Kelley, 2nd Vice President of NAPMM and Manager of the St Louis Produce Market.  A huge round of thanks goes out to Conference co-hosts Nick Rodelli and George Maroulis along with their staff -- especially Danielle Brooks.   The NAPMM Board would also like to thank the Howard Hughes Corporation for their unbelievably generous support of the conference as well. We would also like to recognize Bob Lewis for his tireless effort and all of our other sponsors for their generous contributions.

Fall Regional Retail Meeting in Grand Rapids a Huge Success

Over twenty NAPMM retail members attended the Fall Regional Meeting hosted by the Grand Rapids Downtown Market. The LEED’s certified market exemplifies what is possible with community support.  Market Executive Director, Mimi Fritz and her staff were great hosts and really showcased this magnificent structure. The vision of the City’s Grand Action Committee guided by the efforts of Ted Spitzer, Market Ventures and Hugh Boyd Architects resulted in this showcase example of a multi-faceted, food focused, shopping and teaching destination.

The market features a 3000 sq. ft. incubator kitchen, a 4000 sq. ft. rooftop greenhouse (which is a production, teaching and event space as well as an iconic symbol of the market), a demonstration kitchen with a 3700 sq. ft. event and banquet space as well as a 1900 sq. ft. teaching kitchen with multiple stations which feature adjustable counters and infrared cook tops as well as several meeting rooms and classroom spaces used by a local charter school , offices for Michigan State Extension and two restaurant spaces soon to be occupied. The entire complex including the adjacent sidewalks, is heated by a state of the art geothermal system. 

The indoor 25,000 sq. ft. market space includes 24 year-round vendors, a recycling center, green walls and some of the best smoked salmon in the world. The vendors are an eclectic mix of local sourced food products and sustainable farm raised meat and fish vendors.  The vendors have done a great job at personalizing their spaces while still holding to the design standards of the facility.  The market also includes 20 outdoor covered farmer stalls.

Market staff provided participants with a behind the scenes tour of the facility and also discussed the operations and finance in detail. Presentations by vendors and Board members gave attendees different prospective on the operation and mission. Friday night included a cooking challenge in the teaching kitchen and a taste of the local craft beers and wines. 

On Saturday the group visited another older outdoor farmers market that has recently been renovated through a concerted community effort.
